Nas x Massive Attack - The Don [Remix]

Nas's latest single The Don has been given the remix treatment by, none other than, the legendary Massive Attack.

Personally, I prefer this to the original.

Massive Attack always come correct and there's no faulting Nas when he's on form.

Elzhi - Elmatic

"The 10-track offering—which finds the Detroit lyricist paying homage to Nas’s classic debute LP, Illmatic—was produced entirely by Will Sessions. Fellow D-Town MC Royce da 5’9” and Illmatic beatmaker Pete Rock also make appearances.
Fans can pre-order limited edition physical copies of the disc and other merchandise at elzhi.com."

This dropped the other week but I've been to busy to listen to it. I finally had to time to give it a once over and I can say it's got some strong tracks on it. I'm a huge fan of Nas' classic debut so to hear a new take on it is always interesting. It's still very similar to Fashawn's ode to Illmatic that came out a while back but on the whole I would say El's interpretation edges it with it's reworked instrumentals and re-imagined concepts.

TDK Chronicles: NaS

It's funny but we were reminiscing about cassette tapes just the other day and here's NaS dropping some knowledge on how it used to be.

Tapes really are a lost format that is probably completely unknown to the iPod generation of click/download and having 80Gb of music in your pocket and probably not knowing, never-mind listening to half of it.

It's a shame NaS didn't mention the Walkman, because that essentially paved the way for Mp3 players and was an important step in tapes and making music a portable medium (without the use of a boombox and 10 DD batteries.) Everyone had their favorite tape and knew the songs inside out - even knowing exactly when to flip the tape to catch a big tune on the other side.

Those were the days...

Kool G Rap ft NaS - Fast Life [Buckwild Remix]

"Not to be confused with this remix (though I like that version more), this track will be found on Buckwild’s upcoming Buckwild Presents EP, featuring a bunch of “then-and-now” tracks from the D.I.T.C. producer’s legendary career."

You know I'm feeling this. Can't beat a DITC beat. Ever. We all know the lyrics but the remix definitely gives the track a new lease of life.

NaS - Deja Vu

Ouf...

This one is incredible. Period. Before the advent of the internet, finding a quality copy of this rare gem was like attempting to find the Ark of the Covenant; it just wasn’t happening, and for good reason. Originally heard on a J Love mixtape (J Love, DJ Clue?, Tony Touch, Doo-Wop mixtapes, they don’t make em like this anymore), this lost NaS joint’s first verse was featured on Raekwon’s quintessential and timeless Verbal Intercourse. You can read the entire story behind this song with producer Chris Winston here. Hats off to Philaflava as well. Born Equality (‘96)!

[*] This acetate rip (dubplate) is more than likely the closest we’ll get to a “mastered” version, being that an acetate disc is almost in the same vein as a master copy. Unless Chris Winston dusts off that DAT. The thing with acetate (dubplates, speaking from experience) is that they tend to have a limited amount of plays before they become unplayable and the sound quality degrades.

Amazing...

DILLmatic

Yep - you guessed it. It's a mixtape of Nas over Dilla beats... Personally I'm not convinced. Dilla beats have been rinsed to death and making Illmatic "better" is simply impossible.
However, I thought it deserving of a post nonetheless. Check it out.

Chip The Ripper - Like That

I've heard some Chip The Rip tunes but none of them captured my attention quite like this one. Chip the Ripper's picked his name well... he ripped this one straight off NaS - but that's probably why I like it!
